About the job POSITION PURPOSE:
The Software Engineer – Instrument Connectivity is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining reliable, secure, and compliant integrations between laboratory instruments and the laboratory software solutions, i.e. Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
This role ensures seamless data acquisition, transformation, and transfer from laboratory instruments into digital laboratory workflows, enabling data integrity, automation, and operational efficiency.
The engineer works closely with laboratory scientists, product managers, QA, validation, and platform teams to support both new instrument onboarding and the ongoing reliability of existing integrations in regulated laboratory environments.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instrument Integration & Connectivity
Design, develop, and support connectivity solutions between laboratory instruments and LIMS platforms Implement instrument interfaces using vendor SDKs, APIs, file-based transfers, middleware, or messaging protocols Support a wide range of instrument types (e.g., analytical instruments, chromatography systems, balances, readers, robots) Enable both real-time and batch data acquisition patterns Data Handling & Transformation Parse, normalize, and validate instrument-generated data (e.g., XML, CSV, JSON, proprietary formats) Ensure correct mapping of instrument output to lab software solutions’ data models and workflows Implement error handling, retry logic, logging, and traceability for data transfers Support data integrity principles (ALCOA+) throughout the data lifecycle Platform & Architecture Contributions Contribute to the instrument connectivity architecture, standards, and reusable integration components Build scalable and maintainable services or adapters for instrument onboarding Collaborate with platform teams on security, authentication, and infrastructure requirements Support deployment and configuration across development, quality, and production environments Quality, Compliance & Validation Develop solutions compliant with GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, and data integrity requirements Support computer system validation (CSV) activities, including documentation and testing evidence Ensure change management and traceability for instrument connectivity changes Collaboration & Support Work closely with laboratory users to understand instrument workflows and data requirements Partner with product managers and business analysts on requirements definition and prioritization Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis of instrument connectivity issues Contribute to knowledge bases, runbooks, and operational documentation Collaborate with others when necessary to review user stories and code and develop implementation approaches Use the agreed implementation approaches to design, code, test, and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, using the right standards and tools Systems Design Translate logical designs into physical designs Produce detailed designs Effectively document all work using required standards, methods, and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate
WHO YOU ARE:
Experience with instrument middleware or integration platforms
Familiarity with message queues or event-driven architectures Experience working in Agile or product squad delivery models Exposure to cloud-hosted LIMS platforms, such as LabVantage, Sample Manager and Benchling, and hybrid lab architectures Understanding of cybersecurity considerations for laboratory instruments
